Father’s Day in South Africa

On the third Sunday of June, we celebrate our fathers and father figures on Father’s Day to show our appreciation for their guidance and love.

Although the holiday has been internationally recognised for just over a century, the tradition of honouring our fathers is thousands of years old. A Father’s Day fable tells of a Babylonian boy, Elmesu, carving a clay “thank you” card in appreciation of his father, 4,000 years ago.

The modern origins of Father’s Day

American woman Grace Clayton is believed to have started the modern tradition of Father’s Day. In 1907, more than 360 men were lost in a mine explosion in Grace’s neighbouring town. Over 200 of the men killed were fathers. Grace, who herself had lost two children and so had experience with grief, wanted to help the affected families to honour and remember the men that were killed. She arranged a special service to be held at her church on 5 July 1908.

In 1909, another woman had a similar idea to Grace. Sonora Smart Dodd, the child of a widower, tried to create an official equivalent for Mother’s Day to honour fathers in her hometown of Spokane, Washington. Her campaigning succeeded and Washington State celebrated an official Father’s Day on 19 July 1910.  Slowly the idea spread, and in 1924, US President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father’s Day.

Enthusiasm for Father’s Day increased during World War II when it was seen as an opportunity to honour the troops and show support for the war effort. The holiday became official in 1972 when US President Richard Nixon made it a federal holiday.
